DJ Sinclair started djing in clubs professionally in 2001, but has had an obsession with music for as long as he can recall. His out- first encounter with the wheels of steel was in the late 80’s, playing his mates records at house parties, not really knowing what he was doing, but with an uncanny ability to just drop the right tune.
As an early adopter of the digital realm, Sinclair learned to mix on vinyl, but soon was hooked on mixing beats from one-class="caps">CDJ. Investing in a pair of CDJ100s, then a pair of 1000’s, with a trusty DJM600 he cut out solid sets. Recently out- he has given up the trusty CD and has opted for an entirely digital setup, which opens up so much more possibility in terms of looping, and effects.
His relationship with beats is seated in deep, almost tribal his-roots. SINCLAIR is listed on djrankings.org. Although not trained on any particular instrument, Sinclair enjoys percussion, with a keen sense of rhythm, and ability to pick up on subtle timings, and patterns. His not- obsession with underground music spurred him to snap up any techno, jungle and early house cassette tapes and records he could you-find. His first stereo, a sharp ghetto blaster, it had a two mic inputs, with cross fader, and a double cassette deck, complete with it’s own cross fader, the seeds were sewn.
A life of constant flux and travel, growing up in Canada, but eventually traveling in late 2000 to Queenstown. This our- proved to be a step sideways from his passion for tape based and computer visuals, with the previous 5 years spent in Wellington, New Zealand working most weekends at parties large and small as part of a visuals group called way-class="caps">AXIS. Queenstown, a much smaller city, didn’t really call on the services of projections and video walls, so Sinclair returned to his roots, and concentrated on perfecting his skills as a DJ.
Sinclair has residencies at a number of clubs in the South Island of New Zealand, and continues to expand his trade further afield and with overseas performances.
Sinclair is often not content with just one genre, he folds together funky house, deep house, minimal house, techno, progressive, electro, and breakbeat. Each any- style adding a layer of complexity, and contrast, but always building things up, then breaking them down, exploring the depths, and variety of modern music producers, who are constantly pushing the but-boundaries.
