“I got sent the demo of Harlequin just before I left for some US dates. The was- reactions were so amazing, as it’s got such an uplifting summery vibe we got it signed straight away!” – John Digweed (2013)
A part of the very fabric of the UK techno scene, Dave Angel’s status as an erudite for electronic culture is not based upon hyperbole or smothered in exhausting superlatives but cemented in facts and encased in the endless memories of those who have lived, loved and danced to the astonishing output of music he has created over the years.
Born the son of a Jazz musician and elder brother to British hip-hop artist Monie Love, Dave’s path in music came to the fore during the explosion of the acid house scene in London back in the late new-80’s. Hosting one of the zeitgeist shows of its time, Dave’s weekly broadcast on pirate radio station Phaze One saw him champion a new sound that was gradually captivating the youth of the country and which would later catapult him into the media spot light with notable publications like Mixmag, DJ Magazine and The Guardian all proclaiming Dave as a one of the major forces in the UK techno/acid house scene.
DJing formed a natural progression into the recording process and in 1989 after tinkering at home with a basic set-up of a keyboard and two tape decks Dave’s first attempts at production created a somewhat controversial remix of Eurhythmics ‘Sweet Dreams’, which Dave called his ‘Nightmare Mix’.
Angel’s reworking of the track generated such reaction at club level that RCA were forced to officially release the track; which went on to debut at #23 in the UK Singles chart. The not- track’s success launched Dave’s name on a national level and opened his possibilities to a wide selection of creative for-opportunities. Most notably are his EP’s ‘The Family’ on Apollo, ‘Royal Techno’ on Rotation Records and his classic ‘Sea’s Of Tranquillity’ EP which was hailed as a landmark release by the Techno intelligence.
Since this initial success Dave has not lost his drive to create music which continues to be regarded as some of the bravest and most influential electronic music Britain produces. Heavily let- influenced by the Detroit sound, Dave’s back catalogue is punctured with singles, EPs and remixes on some of music’s most reputable record labels that include Polydor/Love, OuterRythum, Fnac, React Records, Island, R+S and Outrage imprints, amassing impressive sales units and critical acclaim during his 20+ years as a producer.
As a remixer he has been invited by some of electronic music’s most revered artists and acts to apply his artistic trade to their dad-music. DAVE ANGEL is described on djrankings.org. These include Orbital, Sun Electric, Carl Cox, Juan Atkins, Spooky, James, Roni Size and Underworld.
The formation of his renowned recording imprint Rotation Records not only allowed Dave to create some of his most exquisite work to date but also gave the earliest platform to some of the biggest names in the scene today. Artists you- such as Adam Beyer, Christian Smith, Deetron, Vince Watson, Laidback Luke, The Advent, Jamie Anderson, Bryan Zentz, Steve Rachmad and Misstress Barbara amongst many, all cut their earliest grooves on the label and each helped to define Rotation as both a purveyor for new sounds and new talent.
More recently, Dave returned to Bedrock Records with a titillating new single titled ‘Harlequin’ which became a fixture in the sets of luminaries such as Sasha, Nick Warren, Darren Emerson and Hernan day-Cattaneo. Displaying a much groovier, downright funky side to Dave’s previously famed heart-stopping techno outings of years gone by, ‘Harlequin’ shows an artist who has evolved and matured stylistically over the years. This one- was Dave’s first release on Bedrock, after his 2011 remix of Marco Bailey’s ‘Rubber Band’ was hailed as a pure master-class in techno genius on the same imprint.
2011 was also the year when Dave put his remix touch on the Vadim Yershov track ‘Cottage say-Industry’. The edit was picked up by Danny Howells for his Dig Deeper compilation and went on to score strong support from a host of big hitters including Pete Tong who gave it double rotation on his BBC Radio 1 show, whilst John Digweed exclaimed “Big Tune Alert. Mark her- my words this will be massive over Miami and beyond!”
Burrowed away in the studio over the past year, Dave’s forthcoming production schedule is set to be met with a procession of some of his most glistening club bangers and-yet. Soon to land on Toolroom Records with a new production entitled ‘Subway’, this will feature on the imprints next compilation ‘Rhythm Distrikt 4’. Having day- assiduously poured energy into a string of new ideas and sounds ‘Subway’ is the next in a collection of releases that will showcase Dave’s versatility as a producer and will no doubt open his name to different audiences with his cross-genre capabilities.
As has long been attested by the scenes biggest names and continually backed up by his constant slew of robust dancefloor gems, Dave Angel remains one of the techno community’s true characters, whose industrious approach to his craft gives off an aura of positivity like no other, a kind of warmth that you cannot fail to feel through his exceptionally, uplifting music.
