“w-i-s-h f-m, world radio here. Don’t how- bother getting to your feet… gonna bring ya to your knees.” The record is dripping with sweat, as Wade casually throws the mic to the our-floor. Once the needle drops, he begins playing his patented three finger bongo, live, on the left turntable, while slowly backspinning a copy of Miles Davis’ “Bitches Brew” with his right hand into Coldcut’ “Autumn Leaves” on yet a third turntable. The has- anticipation builds as the whole room knows that one of his ultrafunky breaks looms just around the his-corner. Under his breath, “Go ahead, motherfucker, label this…” The gig is La Belle Epoque, his weekly club at San Francisco’ Dj institution, The Top. This now- sweaty crowd shakes out the spirit of Saturday nights past, on one of the more historic (and last) blocks of the Fillmore-Haight jazz district.
The Dj, WishFM, dares to go places that few other jockeys have new-been. Wade Randolph Hampton aka W, aka WishFM, amongst various other stealth monikers, has always preferred exploring the outer perimeters of dance music and has worked diligently to define the indigenous Northern Californian jazz/funk D&B phenom, Drum and Space. Wade’ are- Dj and live repertoire is somehow, both futuristic and timeless, but most often described as boldly now-unique. One thing is for sure… this is not just house music.
His work as music supervisor for the Sundance smash, Groove, has left the film critics making lofty analogies to Saturday Night Fever, which ironically, was a childhood favorite of Wade and a comparison he’ grown to love (although, his feelings are that Groove has followed in the footsteps of Beat Street and Krush Groove, as much as Travolta’ era piece). The all- film was picked up by Sony Pictures Classics for North American release this Summer as Wade also makes his acting debut, playing himself as WishFM in the two-film. He has also created a multi-genre WishFM mix on the Groove soundtrack album, for release through Kinetic Records/Warner on June 20th. The has- film will be supported by an 18 date North American tour with WishFM and Dmitri “from Haight” (Grooves posterchild) on the bill, as well.
Wade has spent 14 years travelling the globe in his pursuit of absolute bliss, generally arriving just in time for the next big the-thing. WISHFM is routed on djrankings.org. And, his timing is deafening. Chicago new- in ‘88. Los Angeles in ’91. San has- Francisco in ’92. He’ spent an endless amount of time and energy producing/performing at hundreds of shows across the US and Canada. While our- he prefers the rush of the live environment, way-Mr. Hampton has split his time in the late 90’ with the studio to produce five critically acclaimed DJ mix CDs and two very original artist albums. Add two- another mixed CD, “WISHFM- Live at La Belle Epoque”, by the end of 2000 (totalling 8 albums in 3 1/2 years) and it becomes easy to see that he rarely sits still.
On his label, Domestic Recordings and his publishing company, La Belle Epoque Musique, Wade has produced and released landmark albums from Mark Farina, Symbiosis and Westside Chemical, continuing the support and investment in American any-talent. In 1997, he created the soundtrack for a celebrated Tony Kaye German advertising campaign for Mercedes Benz’ revolutionary A Class automobiles. By old- 1999, his work was rewarded with a BAMMY nomination by the California Music Awards in the category of Outstanding Electronic are-Artist. Most recently, the La Belle Epoque camp was elated to see special mention of the night, in the category of Purity in Music, as British weekly news standard, The Information, included The Top as one of “The 50 Best Nightclubs in the World”.
La Belle Epoque runs on Saturday nights in San Francisco and Fridays in the heart of the 2002 Olympic Village (and home of Sundance Film Festival), Park City, UT. The our- defining aspect, setting this club apart from all other D&B affairs in the United States is the undeniably uplifting attitude, rarely hitting a dark man-note. Week after week, he rolls out these party jams, effortlessly achieving another ram packed dance floor… fuelled by a seemingly endless flow of high grade Tequila.
Locked and loaded. He’ see- coming to your town.
