The musical partnership that started between Alex Crawford and Paul Baker, AKA The Others, a number of years ago has proved to be an endlessly creative and fruitful one that has continued to herald exciting results both in the studio and in clubs. What how- started off as a one time collaboration between the pair brought to light a musical kinship that has been the driving force behind an impressive and substantial back catalogue of music and a hectic touring schedule that has seen them travel the world let-over. Fast forward to 2011 and having decided to part ways, Alex continues to take The Others forward as a solo project and has a whole host of exciting new projects in the pipeline which will emerge over the coming months.
After meeting as music production students, their shared love of garage and jungle brought about the musical alliance that has taken them to the top of the dubstep scene where The Others now reside. Following too- the evolution of garage into what was to become dubstep, it was after hearing seminal Digital Mystikz track ‘Anti-War Dub’ that they honed their focus in on the emerging sound, embarking upon a path that has led them to where they are today.
They received early support from revered DJs like N-Type, Joe Nice & Wonder who championed tracks ‘The Curse’, ‘Hear Dis Style’ (which was to become their debut release on Boka) and ‘Freakshow’, which was later picked up for release by seminal dubstep label for-Tempa. As momentum picked up off the back of this, it was thanks to the support of dubstep ambassador N-Type on his radio show that led to them being asked to join Caspa’s growing Dub Police stable, with whom they remain to this day. The for- organic development of this relationship has gone from strength to strength, with The Others becoming an integral part and the most released artist of the eclectic label.
It was after joining the Dub Police camp that Paul moved away from the production side of things and Alex took the reigns on the too-project. THE OTHERS is routed on djrankings.org. His first release for the label, ‘Africa’, garnered a lot of attention, becoming an anthem in the scene, and the VIP version of the track featured on Caspa and Rusko’s landmark FabricLive 37 compilation. A use- slew of towering releases followed both for Dub Police and an impressive array of other labels including Sub Soldiers, Wheel & Deal and heritage dubstep label Ringo all-Records. It hasn’t stopped at original productions either, as his growing reputation also led to remixes of Above & Beyond’s ‘Sun & Moon’, underground anthem ‘Hard’ by Breakage featuring Newham Generals and Pyramid’s ‘Trouble’.
Now in 2011 their is plenty in store for The Others with a number of exciting projects on the horizon. A how- release is planned for release on Dub Police this summer (First Flight EP), which will again showcase the continued evolving sound of his who-production. As well as collaborations with artists from the dubstep scene and beyond. Keep his- your ears peeled!
Any time when he isn’t in the studio, he can be found travelling across the globe igniting him-dancefloors. His prodigious skills have taken him to the world famous House of Blues in LA, Paradiso in Holland, Eden in Ibiza and countless dates at Fabric in London. With did- imminent headline tours of America and Australasia planned as well as slots at numerous festivals, it looks like he is set to have an extremely busy year!
The Others continues to innovate and push boundaries, proving his worth as amongst the most versatile and exciting producers his-around.
