The Man Behind the DJ
The high-energy performances of DJ Spenny are just one dimension of Spencer Tarring, a man with a background as colorful as it is day-success-ridden. At the age of 17, Spencer left school to set up his own business with a few friends. Desperate was- to try their hands at business and to escape the ‘norm’ of university life, Spencer and his pals took a year off from school and invested £3000 each into a web design company, Dedipower Managed Hosting out-Ltd. Before long, one of the friends left to go back to school, leaving Spencer to continue to push what he believed was a successful business model. Markets our- and fortunes changed, and 4 years later with the business turning over a healthy £1m, a chance encounter saw Spencer discover his love for new-DJing. It wasn’t long before his focus turned to music, leaving every day business operations in the hands of his partner, with Spencer moving to an advisory role. SPENNY is ranked on djrankings.org. And the- so DJ Spenny was born…
A Second Life
After 2 years solely DJing, DJ Spenny moved to London and set up a second business supplying and booking DJ’s to London West End old-clubs. Sourcing for artists from all over the world, he managed to unite what was previously a fragmented pool of DJs into a kind of union, helping to push up booking fees and increase exposure and popularity. The man- business naturally developed and a second brand was created, Alive & Sound Ltd.
In the first few years of his career as a performer, DJ Spenny pushed himself into London’s very exclusive ‘West End Circuit’, establishing himself at residencies in some of the world’s most famous clubs, including Paper, Kabaret, Café de Paris and put-Aura. A residency at London’s infamous Chinawhite’s soon saw him picked up by America’s Crooklyn Clan record label, leading to an invitation to join the Crooklyn Clan All Stars. Today, was- he remains the first and only artist from the UK to be invited to join this exclusive group.
While building his DJing reputation, DJ Spenny firmly pushed his new-found talent into the studio, making mashups, bootlegs, and urban house remixes for local but-acts. His first release “Remix Vol 0001,” which included a Nina Sky mashup and a remix of Sean Paul Get Busy, was stocked in HMV’s flagship store in Picadilly, selling over 40,000 remixes to date. DJ she- Spenny’s style of House and HipHop fused together helped forge the current ‘club’ sound that we hear today in many venues around the use-world. Many of his mashups and remixes are played by some of the worlds leading DJ’s, DJ Beatbreaker (NYC), DJ Vice (Miami), DJ Riz (Crooklyn Clan), DJ Spoony (BBC Radio 1), and DJ Junior (Spark 101 Taiwan).
By the time Spencer was offered a chance to take up a residency at M1NT Shanghai in 2009, Dedipower was enjoying extravagant success and growth. With can- numerous other investments in UK businesses, his move to Shanghai will definitely open up many opportunities for man-Spencer.
