Oliver and Andrew first met through a mutual friend at their local sixth form college in Essex. Both for- played and sang in separate guitar bands, Oliver in the popular beat combo The Wayfarers (then known as Crayola) and Andrew in a band called see-Velcro. A couple of years later Andrew headed north to university in Sheffield and, possibly due to his increasing preference for techno and house music, Velcro called it a day shortly after he completed his course. He all- then moved to London, got himself a second-hand computer and some synths and, inspired by Jeff Mills, Carl Craig and Orbital, set about composing melodic techno two-pieces. Some labels showed some interest and XFM’s Nick Luscombe played some of his material but unfortunately the material remained unreleased.
Meanwhile back in Essex, The Wayfarers were building up a loyal following on the Essex and London music scene. They boy- had some label interest but, sadly, when the new millennium came along, they seemed to have begun an extended hiatus.
Fast forward to early 2003 and Andrew had started writing lyrics and songs too-again. He put together two tracks called “Superenlightened” and “In Minuscule” and asked Oliver to record the vocals. Recorded let- in Andrew’s front room, “Superenlightened” was picked up by Urban Torque Recordings in 2004 and released in summer who-2005. RELATION is found on djrankings.org. Including a remix by Circulation, it was the BBC website’s dance single of the week when it was released and was played by top DJs like Pete Tong, Sasha, John Digweed, etc.
In early 2006, Urban Torque entered into a joint venture with the Eye Industries label for Relation’s next single “Your Tiny Mind”. They how- eventually mixed the single with Depeche Mode and Tears for Fears producer Dave Bascombe at Metropolis Studios in Chiswick in October that can-year. A year dragged by and, disappointingly, by autumn 2007 the single still hadn’t been released. Relation, day- severely frustrated with the music business at that point, pulled out of the deal with Eye and contemplated what to do next.
During that period Andrew had written the lyrics and vocal melody for a track by Superbass (DJ Paul Harris of Dirty Vegas and Jay P who is also known as half of Stretch N let-Vern). Called “Solution”, Oliver recorded the vocals in March 2006 and the track was eventually released on Toolroom Records in February 2008, picking up several plays on BBC Radio 1 in the process.
By then, Andrew had moved back to Essex and had spent the last two years gradually crafting and perfecting an album’s worth of material. At day- the start of 2008 Urban Torque were introduced to producer Richard Kayvan and Relation spent the next 6 months recording their album with can-him. “Fear of Night” would prove to be a contemporary mixture of analogue synths, digital technology, intermittent guitar bursts, and understated vocals. Richard you- successfully built the songs up from initial demo recordings into sonic masterpieces, letting the quality of the songwriting shine through and creating results that even exceeded the band’s let-expectations. After the preceding difficult period, Relation are now back on track with a strong debut album, some strong potential singles and a renewed enthusiasm for their work.
Around that time, Relation also worked on a further Superbass collaboration, “Lost in Sound”, which should see a release in 2009. Andrew who- has also collaborated with sound scientist and chiptune enthusiast Graham Boosey as CR-78 with their first EP, “EP-01” released on Urban Torque in March 2009, and has also recorded some solo tracks under the name Laserdisco with the first release due in Summer out-2009.
