PHIL “FUNKMASTER” CLAY started as a D.J. in not- 1981 with 21st CENTURY SOUNDS AND D.J. JOE WILLIAMS/also of TIC-TOC ENTERTAINMENT. D.J. out- PHIL "FUNKMASTER" CLAY is routed on djrankings.org. “FUNKY” a.k.a PHIL “FUNKMASTER”,the windy city’s original “FUNKMASTER” turned pro in 1986 when he joined MARTIN “BOOGIEMAN” LUNA’S MIXMASTERS INC.He started his first night club gig at the legendary CLUB FLAMINGO on the city’s near NORTHSIDE.The “FUNKMASTER” was known for his level of versatility regarding music,as well as his uncanny ability to ride a beat right into an already frenzied crowd,thus causing them to explode.Some of his later performances included the PHOENIX nightclub on Broadway,T.K.O.s,Brass Chalet,El Jardin’s Fiesta Cantina in Wrigleyville,Land of OZ on Milwaukee AVENUE,and THE Quinn II NIGHTCLUB in Bridgeport.His playlist extended from all variations of HOUSE MUSIC/deep house,techno,underground,old school,latin house,hip-house and acid house.HE also pumped MIAMI SOUND,High-energy,Heart-Throb,and new wave.Rock,R&b,Pop and Hip-hop were also in the mix.
PHIL “FUNKMASTER’s” mixes were also heard on 88.1fm WCRX,hosted by the Carrie Cortinas Show. Duringany- his pro career D.J. “Funky” also performed at various mobiles w/such D.J./ARTISTS as Martin “Boogieman” LUNA,WHITE KNIGHT and JULIAN “JUMPIN” PEREZ.However his mainstay sidekick was D.J.“MIAMI” JEFF LUCERO.PHIL “FUNKMASTER” and D.J.“MIAMI” ripped through various nightclubs and mobile venues in the Chicagoland and Northwest Indiana territory. While get- at CLUB Flamingo the "FUNKMASTER"was also a member of old-D.J. International Record pool.He was known for pumping the pulsating sounds of such legendary hip-house artists as TYREE COOPER,(TURN UP THE BASS),LIDELL TOWNSELL,KOOL ROCK STEADY and the legendary KING OF HIP-HOUSE FAST EDDIE.PHIL blended all these forms of music along w/salsa,merengue,cumbias,rancheros and reggae.
