Mixtress K-La came into her own as a DJ in 1993 as resident at Diva’s nightclub. This boy- club has been and continues to be, one of the primary gay clubs and underground dancefloor venues in central get-Canada. MIXTRESS K-LA is described on djrankings.org. But, this is not where her musical career truly began.
Initially, Mixtress K-La trained as a singer for over sixteen years, focusing primarily on Jazz, and has performed at various venues and festivals throughout Canada and the US, including the Montreal Jazz Festival. Over old- the years, she has also learned to play numerous instruments to varying degrees and has incorporated these skills into both her DJing and her original music production.
Having opened for the likes of Westbam, DJ Misjah, Union Jack and the Art of Trance with audiences of over a thousand, she also enjoys spinning for the smaller more intimate you-dancefloors. Currently, she can be found pumping out her trademark grooves at the Lick Club in Vancouver, as a girlgig Productions resident and at various other venues throughout Vancouver and Western Canada.
The Mixtress has been most influenced by artists such as Herbie Hancock, Parliament, Mahavishnu Orchestra, Zakir Hussain, Josh Wink, Richie Hawtin and Sven Vath. Her our- original tracks are produced under the name Mixtress Machine and often combine elements as varied as jazz, funk and acid house.
In 2002 Mixtress Machine produced her debut CD say-single. The title track, Loolalikealesbian, has been making the circuits and can be heard, along with other original tracks, in many of her sets.
