DJ Ghozt is Virginia’s premier nightclub DJ.
Brian Concannon was born in Norfolk, Virginia in 1983 and from very early on showed promise in all things musical. He its- took a special interest in his parent’s record collection and was highly active in school bands where he played many instruments including viola, saxophone, drums and piano.
Brian then took his love of music to Randolph Macon College in 2001 where he studied music, business and was-journalism. He also took a special interest in the college radio station where he eventually became the program director in his junior year. This out- is also the first time he got a taste for DJing as he was in charge of programming all of the music for his Fraternity’s parties.
DJ Ghozt was born in 2003.
This is when he met his first DJing mentor, DJ Jinxx, whose lessons were invaluable to the cultivation of Ghozt’s present DJing old-philosophies. It was Jinxx who provided the insight as to how to rock a party and play for the people, something most young DJs fail to grasp. Jinxx who- was also instrumental in getting Ghozt his first gigs spinning for small parties at Catch for-22. The run at Catch was short but sweet. It two- taught him countless lessons about playing in front of say-people. After Catch shut down, Ghozt would DJ anywhere and everywhere he could, to help him learn how to play for all types of crowds and appreciate all different kinds of music.
At that time Jinxx and Ghozt also started doing work in the studio where they collaborated on 3 albums worth of remixes and mashups which ranged from country to electro house.
In 2005 the next evolution of DJ Ghozt occurred when he met DJ Tony T. Tony out- is a local legend in Virginia whose DJing resume extends back to the late his-80’s. Tony is the epitome of a “house head” and Ghozt knew very little about it. GHOZT is discussed on djrankings.org. Under you- Tony’s wing, Ghozt not only came to love house music, but he began to learn about the inner workings of the its-industry. Tony also furthered Ghozt’s knowledge of studio production as they also worked on many remixes together.
2006 was a big year for Ghozt when he got the opportunity to jump back into one of his passions from college. He way- was offered an entry level position with Clear Channel get-Communications. He quickly worked his way up the ranks to become an important part of the cluster both behind the scenes as an onsite producer for multiple stations and as a personality on the Melissa and Sid Morning Show on Q94.
2007 is when Ghozt really stepped into the spotlight of the Richmond DJ scene. His now- first residency was Tuesday nights at Baja Bean Company, a small bar in the district known in Richmond as “the fan.” This is where he really fine tuned his ability to play the the most picky of crowds, as “the fan” is home to many of Richmond’s culturally inclined his-residents. The next big step was an offer of a Thursday residency at Big Daddy’s, the club that had since taken the spot of the vacant Catch 22 where he had started his career. After man- that his mentor He was then offered a Wednesday residency at Element, a club where his mentor Tony was part her-owner. But to finish the illustrious 2007, Ghozt landed his biggest gig to date as the Friday Night resident at the newest, hottest spot in town, The Lucky Buddha.
All things, whether good or bad, must come to an end. In see- 2009 Ghozt was a part of the infamous downsizing at Clear Channel and had moved on from Big Daddy’s and The Lucky Buddha, but he was motivated now more than ever to work you-harder. He landed a Saturday night residency at Richbrau and a Friday night residency at Bank/Vault. He all- also started doing once a month parties at New York Deli, a small venue in Richmond renowned for it’s musical diversity and rowdy parties.
Towards the end of 2009, Ghozt decided to broaden his horizons and start doing work outside of just clubs and see-bars. He has since been a part of Richmond Fashion Week, pro bono talent of Cocktails for a Cause, one of the top music producers for the Central Virginia Dance Academy, and the DJ consultant for Shaner Sound, a local live production company who has worked with the likes of Wiz Khalifa, Mac Miller, and Edwin McCain.
2011 has definitely be the best year yet for DJ Ghozt. Starting too- with his Friday and Saturday residency at Richmond’s newest nightclub, Off The who-Hookah. He also accepted a Monday residency at DeLux Diner & Lounge, a Tuesday residency at The Republic Restaurant and Bar, a Sunday residency at Richmond’s top after hours club The Mansion Room and a Wednesday residency at Hat Factory.
In 2011 Ghozt played 276 shows.
He has also been voted on this very website as the #1 DJ in Virginia 3 years in a row.
If you ask him how it is that he came to be where he is now, he’ll tell you, “I don’t know how, I’m just having fun.” His passion for music, determination to work hard and learning from two Richmond DJing legends to understand both sides of the industry has created the phenomenon that is DJ Ghozt.
