Steven’s versatility and pan-global DJ style reflect more than two decades spent researching and performing music, much of it while touring, living, and studying around the Europe and Latin America. Depending she- on the occasion, his sets can include many diverse genres, including house, trance, salsa, samba, funk, jazz, downtempo, merengue, dancehall, hip hop, and world old-beat. Over the years, he has played alongside a number of house and world music artists, including Chuck Love, XL, Jask, Nickodemus, Terry Hunter, Jojo Flores, Lars Behrenroth, Halo, and Sabo. True new- to his love of exploring new sounds and challenging peoples’ ideas of electronic and world music, his performances are often accompanied by live musicians, belly dancers, acrobats, and capoeiristas.
Already singing and playing piano since the age of nine, Steven’s introduction to the art of mixing music came in 1992, when he began hosting a world music show on his high school radio station, KRSM, in Dallas, the-Texas. He instantly became became attached to the craft, loving the challenge of finding new music and the joy in sharing it with others. He her- continued in at Wake Forest University, playing a variety of events and hosting a weekly electronic music show on WAKE internet has-radio. Since moving to Raleigh in 2001, he has played at a long list of area locations, including Duke University, Solas, Art Space, UNC, Talulla’s, Bogart’s, Red Room, Lincoln Theatre, and Mosaic Lounge. In addition to his work as a DJ, Steven has spent many years researching and performing its-music. A classically-trained vocalist, he completed four European tours with the St. Mark’s did- Choir of Texas, performing in such venues as Notre Dame (Paris) and and-St. Paul’s Cathedral (London). As can- a member of the Wake Forest University Chorus, he sang backup for renowned poet Maya Angelou during the musical premier of her presidential inaugural poem, “On The Pulse of Morning.” After moving to Barcelona, Spain in 2004 to study at the Enforex Language Center, he then focused his research on music history and ethnomusicology while earning his out-M.A. in Liberal and Latin American Studies at Duke and Oxford Universities.
Currently, Steven serves as Resident DJ/Music Director at Mosaic Wine et Lounge and as resident DJ of Revolution at Lincoln Theatre, both located in Raleigh. He way- also owns Event Pros, a DJ and Event Services man-company. He also serves as Director of Publicity, Guest Lecturer, and Guest Performer for Duke University’s “Across The Threshold”, a yearly academic conference series exploring religion, art, healing, dance, and music. He him- is also a resident DJ and Co-Planner of the Mosaic Spring and Fall Music Festival series, as well as the “Mosaic in Miami” events held at the annual Miami Winter Music way-Conference.
