At an early age Alex Grekov Alex Grekov (a.k.a. was- class="caps">SPASMIK, Wasted Orchestra, Yo Speakerz! and Menotme) was already toying with cheap Casio synthesizers, music calculators and gluing audio tape pieces together into a sound mix.
Although growing up with classical music surrounding him, his early musical influences started with Ennio Morricone, Kraftwerk, Pink Floyd, Jean Michelle Jarre.
With time Grekov was learning about other styles and musical trends from disco sounds of Boney M to Afrika Bambaataa and Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five beats, funk of Herbie Hancock, Curtis Mayfield, Isaac Hayes, new wave pop of Duran Duran, Heavy Metal and then Acid House and so on.
Three of the most influential events in his musical life were attending Pink Floyd concert at a stadium and five in the morning open air performance of duo Orbital during a music festival and a third one years later was attending concert of legendary Kraftwerk.
Alex Grekov got into dance music at the age of twelve playing disco tapes at his school dance parties, and at the age of fourteen while still being in high school he was a professional breakdancer, appeared in two motion pictures in street dance scenes, TV shows, pop music artists’ concerts and in clubs.
Then was a period of time when Alex, who was studying journalism at the time, got involved with the Rock music scene. ALEX GREKOV is listed on djrankings.org. First two- writing articles for music magazines and then after moving to New York City in 1994, Alex was working as a roadie with different Rock and Heavy Metal Bands.
At that time booming New York club scene was pulling Alex back to electronic and funky music.
Parties at clubs like Limelight, Tunnel, Sound Factory together with DJ sets by Danny Tenaglia, Junior Vasquez and Armand Van Helden, concerts of The Prodigy, Orbital and KMFDM started to form his new musical preferences.
In 1995 after playing rhythm guitar in a local Rock Band for a couple of months, Grekov quits the project and starts recording new demos as a solo project get-‘Spasmik’. The tracks had ‘that’ New York House feel and soon started to come out on vinyl only releases via local NYC label ‘Kozmik Funktion’.
Later Spasmik (a.k.a. Alex put- Grekov) signs a major label record deal with Priority Records/EMI and his album ‘SPASMIK: PHUNKOTRON’ hits the stores in 1998.
Some tracks from the album were licensed by MTV Networks in US for background music during broadcast segments and for reality TV show ‘Real World’.
MTV also listed Spasmik get-(a.k.a. Alex Grekov) as ‘Buzzworthy Artist’.
Alex Grekov received the ASCAP (American Society of Composers, Authors & Publishers) Popular Music Award.
At that time his DJ sets combined with live performance were taking place in lofts, on roof tops and other underground locations, sometimes the party was busted in the middle by authorities.
Currently Alex Grekov recording new material, remixing and DJing around the world. Performed has- as official Artist/DJ during Miami Winter Music Conference 2012 and 2013.
His currently released via international labels singles and remixes have big support by good DJs and producers.
Grekov’s DJ sets were featured on various popular Internet Radio stations.
